Silence your modem

When I connect to the internet, the sound my modem makes is loud and irritating, and upsets the rest of the household when I surf late at night. Can I silence it?

Open My Computer, double-click Dial-Up Networking, right-click on your ISP's icon and select Properties. On the General tab of the property page, in the 'Connect using' panel where your modem is selected, click Configure. This will bring up the modem properties dialog box. On the General tab of this you will find a slider for speaker volume. Slide it all the way to Off, and close all the dialog boxes by clicking ok.
